Difficult Year for Birds

We’re not sure why we haven’t seen the number and variety of birds this year that we’ve had in the past. Our speculation is mainly that clear cutting in South America has led to loss of habitat in critical wintering grounds as well as the impact of storms during fall migration. But we don’t really know. Northwest to Alaska

This spring we finally went on our trip to Alaska. The trip had been postponed due to COVID but we got our vaccinations and were able to go. Except that instead of visiting the Pribilofs which are still closed to visitors, we went to Homer instead. So our trip included: Anchorage, Homer, and Denali. Cedar Island and Marbled Godwits

Slowly Learning…

So as I mentioned in my last post, I’m slowly learning how to use my new Canon EOS R5 camera to photograph nature. Mostly birds, but I also photograph anything else that catches my fancy when I’m out walking around every day. Back in my youth, I’d just grab a pair of binoculars and go birding. Life was simple. I generally used a pair of 10×40 binoculars but even though I had a really good pair, they got attacked by fungus and I got a new set of binoculars that are 10×42. I don’t like them as well, but they work.
